BACKGROUND OF THE KOMALA'S GROUP

The founders of Komala's are from a family of Restaurateurs who have been in the restaurant business for more than half a century. The Komala's Group started as a restaurant serving traditional Indian vegetarian meals that was founded by Mr. Murugiah Rajoo (M. Rajoo)in 1947. The restaurant has built up a high reputation for its quality, value-for-money authentic Indian food, as well as its commitment to cleanliness and hygiene. It is the commitment to such values that earned Komala 's popularity with the Indians, Malays, Chinese and tourists throughout its 50-year history in Singapore. Komala's, an operating division of The Komala's Group, led by M Rajoo's sons, R.T. Sekar and R.C. Sekar, spearheaded the inception of two new dining concepts of Indian vegetarian food - Komala's Restaurants and The Gangezs. Komala's Restaurants is a fast food self-service concept offering traditional Indian vegetarian food in a western setting.




INCEPTION OF KOMALA'S RESTAURANTS

R.T. Sekar, envisioned that there is a market demand for contemporary dining experiences of Indian vegetarian food. With this vision, R.T. Sekar and R.C. Sekar, spearheaded the opening of Komala's Restaurants in July 1995. This concept offered traditional food at affordable prices in a modern setting. It harnessed the strengths of the universal acceptance of vegetarian food and the convenience of fast food. The target customers for Komala's Restaurants are teenagers, young adults, families of Singaporean (all races), tourists and Indians.

The vision of the founders was clearly spelt out below:

"To Make Quality Indian Vegetarian Food Readily Available Internationally At Affordable Prices."




APPROACH

The founders of Komala's, with almost 25 years experience in the restaurant business, understood that there is a strong demand for Indian vegetarian food in Singapore and in the international market. Komala's believes that the best way to accomplish their vision is to establish more Komala's Restaurants as it enables consumers to enjoy authentic Indian vegetarian meals without having to pay inflated prices. The concept also has the added benefits of fast food style deliveries. A formal business planning exercise in June 1997 by the management team of Komala's led to the following three-pronged expansion approach:
a) To set up a Komala's Fast Food pilot outlet in Singapore by 1998.
b) To set up a Restaurant cum Training School in India by 1999.
c) Expand Komala's Fast Food to India ( Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Coimbatore ),
Australia, U.K., U.S.A. and the Middle-East from 2000 to 2005, through an efficient franchise network.




MILESTONES OF THE KOMALA'S GROUP

1995KOMALA'S RESTAURANTS was opened in Jul 95 at Upper Dickson Road.
1996Launched KOMALA'S FINE DINING RESTAURANT - THE GANGEZS.
1997Komala's Pte Ltd was formed to head the chain of KOMALA'S RESTAURANTS.
1998Two new KOMALA'S RESTAURANTS were opened
March   : Peninsula Plaza (in the city area)
August  :Scotts Shopping Centre (in prime shopping belt)
1999January :

training school was set up in Madras.
Soft launch of KOMALA'S RESTAURANTS Franchise .
2000February :Launched Fine Dining Restaurant - The Gangezs in Madras .
2000August : KL,Malaysia 1st Franchised outlet.
2001February :Muscat,Oman 2nd Franchised outlet.

2002February :Opening of new outlet in Singapore at Marine Cove.

2004Opening of new franchised outlet in Indonesia.
